General improvement of the façades of the Central de Cervejas, Vialonga
The purpose of the intervention was to improve the façades of Corpo D - Maltaria, and Corpo E - Silos of the Central de Cervejas plant, in Vialonga. This is a 40 meter high building composed of a frame structure with pillars, beams, and reinforced concrete façades. The work was more than a simple façade improvement in a structural rehabilitation job.
The multiple rehabilitation intervention strategy involved repairing and replacing the concrete in delaminated areas or where the strengthenings were corroded (anodic areas), and strengthening the structure through reinforced concrete encapsulation, and finally protecting the concrete with suitable paint. In order to repair the façades, the deteriorated concrete was removed and the surfaces prepared to receive passive strengthenings, and the concrete covering was replaced by shotcrete. After the repair work was completed, the façades were cleaned to allow the application of a final protective coating that consisted of two coats of acrylic paint.
This was a job with a large intervention area, comprising the elevations of the two buildings involved, totalling around 10 000 m², corresponding to 14.5% of the total area. Due to its size, the job required high use of human resources and materials.
